Tahar Haddad (1899-1935) was a modernist Tunisian scholar best known for contributing to female emancipation and trade unionism in his country. His book Muslim Women in Law and Society (Imraʾatunā fī al-sharīʾa wa-al-mujtamaʾ), published in 1930, although very controversial during his time, had a significant influence on the struggle towards female emancipation. Its echoes can be found even in Tunisian Family Law, which made some of Haddad’s claims a reality by banning talāq and polygyny, for example. During this seminar, we will look into Haddad’s proposals and analyze their impact on family law.
